“Virtual” Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike Bring Your Dog

 Friday, January 15, through Monday, January 25 – 2021

Because of pandemic health concerns, our Group’s popular, mid-winter Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike Bring Your Dog (or other domestic pet) will be staged as a “virtual” event. Participants  have an opportunity to run, walk or hike in the 3.1 mile race on their own or with their family and friends at any location they desire.

If you want to join in the fun, and we really hope you do, you first must register for the race through this website, www.lancastersierraclub.org (click on Polar Bear 5K VIRTUAL Race at the top of the page), and then finish your 5K between today, Friday, January 15, and Monday, January 25.

Distinctive prizes in various categories will be awarded randomly. Participants are encouraged to post pictures of themselves with their canine friends on Facebook and Instagram, with the hashtag #PB5K21. If you participate, you’re also welcome to submit your completion time but, this year, it will not be used as a basis for prizes.

The registration fee is $25 through January 24, 2021. Face masks, with the Polar Bear 5K logo on them, will be sent to all registrants (while supplies last) who sign up for the event; although not necessary, we would like our participants to wear the PB5K masks while on their 5K routes, especially if they will be submitting and sharing videos of themselves.

(This is really important.) We’re asking all participants to abide by the guidelines and protocols recommended by the CDC and PA Health Department in effect on the day they run, walk or hike the route or trail of their choice, and to be aware of trail and environmental conditions.

For all you need to know about the PB 5K, visit http://lancastersierraclub.org/polar-bear-5k-virtual-race/, email , or “Like” us on Facebook at facebook.com/sierraclublancaster.

Come join us virtually as we celebrate the end of the year with food (ha, ha, show and tell via video I guess), possibly some games and perhaps special prizes!  Our only agenda item is to gather online for an evening of fun and camaraderie and perhaps some discussion about how we’ll all gear up again once the worst of the pandemic is in our rear-view mirrors. To  join this Zoom potluck, To  join this Zoom potluck, please email  for the sign-in link and other information. We hope to see all your smiling faces!

Sierra Club Foundation seeks support for Lancaster Group in today’s ExtraGive

Friday, November 20, 2020 – 12 midnight – 11:59 PM

We’re participating in the EXTRAordinary Give today and asking you to please consider making a donation to support the work of our club. It’s easy! All you have to do today (Friday, November 20) is to log in to Our Online Giving Page and follow through. Donations will be accepted at the site from 12 midnight to 11:59 PM as part of Lancaster County’s largest day of online giving. And remember, every dollar you donate will be STRETCHED by a half a MILLION dollars, thanks to Rodgers & Associates, the High Foundation and all of the extraordinary community sponsors.

Your financial support will assist us greatly in fulfilling our mission of preserving, protecting and exploring the natural environment. We achieve that year-round by offering everyone a variety of free educational and outdoor experiences that include seminars, movies, cleanups, and hikes. We also support local organizations with our “green project” grants, funded primarily with proceeds from the popular Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike held each January, excluding this coming January due to the ongoing pandemic.

Thank you in advance for supporting the Sierra Club – Lancaster Group—through the Sierra Club Foundation!

Canceled due to Coronavirus threat: Upper Chesapeake Bay Field Experience Outing

Saturday, April 18, 2020 – 9 AM-1 PM

All are invited to join us as we partner with the Chesapeake Foundation for this environmental education outing, which will take place on the Upper Chesapeake Bay at Havre de Grace, Md.—where the bay meets the Susquehanna River.

Those registering for the outing will learn about this section of the bay’s marine life, birds, water quality and, particularly, how the latter is influenced by Lancaster County. We’ll have the option of either carpooling at 7:30 a.m. from the A.C. Moore parking lot, Lancaster, or driving alone to Havre de Grace’s Tidewater Marina, the boat launch site, where we will meet our outings leader Jane Druce and sign brief health forms and waivers of liability. There will be time after the trip, for those interested, to visit Havre de Grace’s historic and park-like waterfront areas.

Cost of the outing is $20 per person. If interested, you should register soon since space is limited. To register or for more details, please call (717) 575-8705 or email

Postponed “indefinitely” due to Coronavirus threat: Presentation on Tree Care for Clean Water and Biodiversity in Lancaster County”

Wednesday, March 18, 2020  – 7 PM

Here is a great opportunity to learn about tree care for clean water and biodiversity in Lancaster County, as well as how you can be directly involved in the Stroud Water Research Center’s buffer zone maintenance efforts. We’ll meet, as usual, in The Stone Independent School, 480 New Holland Ave., #7101, Lancaster. Admission is free.

Our speaker will be Lamonte Garber, the watershed restoration coordinator for the Stroud Water Research Center in Avondale. His presentation will cover various ways that volunteers can work with ongoing conservation efforts to help create clean waterways in Lancaster County. To get a better idea about Lamonte’s talk, please access the online video, https://stroudcenter.org/news/tree-care-for-successful-riparian-forest-buffers/.  A Q & A period will follow the presentation.

In his position with Stroud, Lamonte is involved with farmers and conservation organizations to advance soil health, stream health and water quality in Pennsylvania and the wider region. He has some 30 years of experience working with a variety of agriculture and natural habitat restoration projects in the Chesapeake, Delaware and Ohio Watersheds.

We hope you can join us for what promises to be an enlightening presentation.  Email for more details.
